What if we combined libertarian thinking with the Nordic model?

Part of truly respecting someone's life project is making sure they can be re-equipped to restart if they need to

This week, I had the incredible opportunity to meet the first liberal-libertarian president of the history of the world.

Yes, Javier Milei, president of Argentina.

I said to him:

"Che Milei, I am completely fascinated by the ideas of "Freedom", by the libertarian manifesto, by the work of the Austrian School of Economics and obviously by the work you are doing in Argentina, where you have lifted 10 million people out of poverty.

I am completely sold into the thinking behind liberalism, understood as "the unrestricted respect for the life project of others, based on the non-aggression principle and the defense of the rights to life, liberty, and property"

However I struggle to see how this can be applied into practice, as this thinking assumes that everyone has all the tools and knowledge they need to construct their life project. When the reality is that most people are stuck into just trying to survive.

It is not enough to say to people "be free and pursue your own life project!".

To be able to promote this freedom we need to ensure first that everyone is equipped to take on that project in the best possible way.

And we also need to support people along the way.

I am not saying that we should manage the project for them, schedule check-ins, or try to influence their outcomes.

I am saying that, as you know, many projects fail. So part of truly respecting someone’s life project is making sure they can be re-equipped to restart if they need to.

I lived 5 years in Argentina, and now I live in Norway. And I must say that I am also very fascinated by the "Nordic model", that focuses precisely on that. On ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have a successful life project.

It might not be considered as the "freest" of all models, but it is a system that works and It has helped the five Nordic countries rank among the richest in the world in GDP per capita.

Che Milei, I got an idea. How do you think it would look a model that combines the best of both worlds? This is, the best of the libertarian thinking and the Nordic model?"

His reply:

"Maybe you can tell me?!"

Deal. More on this new project soon.

In the meantime: Viva la libertad, for faen!
