Greenland is not Nordic!

It’s exactly what happened with Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl. You can put the Puerto Rican flag at the center of the biggest show in the US but that doesn’t turn the island into a State of the Union

Including Greenland as a permanent member of the Nordic Council of Ministers sounds like a terrible idea.

Let’s look at it clearly:

First: this is an identity scam. We need to be honest, being "Nordic" isn't just a club for people who can handle the cold and enjoy minimalist furniture, it is an identity with deep roots: Germanic lineage, Lutheranism, and a shared history of kings and Vikings. Greenland is another galaxy. It is Inuit culture, North American geography, and a cosmology that owes nothing to Europe. If you try to force Greenland into the heart of the "Nordic" concept, you only have two choices, and both are bad. Either you force Greenlanders to stop being themselves so they can look like "second-class Danes," or you turn the word "Nordic" into a hollow administrative label that means nothing. If everyone can be Nordic, then nobody is

Second: this equality is a cardboard movie set. In theory, the Council is a forum for sovereign states. But Greenland is not sovereign, it relies on Denmark for its defense, its currency and its foreign policy. Giving them a permanent seat as "equals" is a diplomatic magic trick: they make you look at the chair so you don’t notice they are still under tutelage. It’s like seating the intern at the board of directors' table to make them feel important, but not letting them touch the budget. It is a supervised autonomy disguised as diplomacy to pretend that they have already reached the goal without having gone through the "cumbersome" process of real self-determination

Third: it is an aesthetic patch designed to avoid independence. Instead of facing the open-heart surgery that decolonization requires, the Nordic countries have opted for a glittery band-aid. The subliminal message to Greenland is: "Why would you want to be free when you already have a seat with the grown-ups?". It is a distraction tactic to quiet the hunger for sovereignty with an honorary title. The honest thing to do would be to allow Greenland to be a sovereign nation and then, once they own their own destiny, sit down to negotiate a partnership among equals. Anything else is skipping the "freedom" part to head straight to the banquet photo-op

Fourth: it’s exactly what happened with Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl. You can put the Puerto Rican flag at the center of the biggest show in the US but that doesn’t turn the island into a state of the Union, nor does it change its reality as a protectorate. If you shove Puerto Rico into the core of "Americanness," you have to accept that the US is now Caribbean, speaks Spanish and dances to reggaeton. If you aren’t willing to change your definition of your own country, then you are just putting a show

The same goes for Greenland: either you accept that "Nordic" is now Inuit and American or you admit you’re just using Greenland as exotic décor while they still don’t have the keys to their future

It is colonialism with Scandinavian design and polite manners, but it is still colonialism whatsoever
