If you are European and feel crushed by your current leaders, you need a crash course in the LGBTQ+ community golden rules
There is something vital that the most crushed community in history can teach you. Whether you are a doctor in Spain on strike, a Pole watching your constitution being bypassed or a French suffering political prosecution, this is for you:
- You need to come out politically. The system loves it when you stay in the closet. They want you to think you’re the only one who cares so you’ll stay quiet to avoid being the weirdo. But silence is a trap. The moment you "come out" and speak your truth, you realize half the street was just waiting for someone else to be brave first. Pride starts the moment you stop hiding who you are to make the neighbors comfortable
- If they call you a name, you take it and own it. When the media calls you "populist" or "backward" stop explaining why you’re actually a normal person. It’s boring and it doesn't work. Instead, own the label. If they call you "crazy" or "antidemocratic" wear it like a glittery jacket. When you reclaim the slur, it stops being a weapon and becomes a badge of honor. If they can’t make you feel ashamed, they’ve lost their only leash
- Make unlikely friends. Allies are found in common pain, not common opinions. You don’t need to love someone’s lifestyle or agree with every opinion to stand next to them. The movement won by finding anyone being squeezed by the same boot. If a farmer is losing his land and a doctor is losing her hospital, they are on the same team. Stop looking for perfect allies. Just look for anyone else who is tired of being stepped on
- Build your own underground world. Before the laws changed, the community built its own networks—its own bars, funds, safety nets—because the State wouldn't help. We must do the same. While elites centralize power in far-away cities, make them irrelevant in your own neighborhood. Support local shops, use cash and create community groups that don’t need government approval. The less you need the "center" to survive, the freer you actually are
- Don’t be a boring grumpy rebel. The system is rigid, gray and soul-crushing. It wants you tired and depressed because miserable people are easy to manage. Don’t give them that satisfaction. Be vibrant, be funny and be a "drag" to the bureaucracy. They know how to handle an angry riot but they have no idea what to do with a creative, happy community that refuses to back down
- Play the long game. Rights weren't won via one protest or one law. It took decades of losing before the winning started. A bad law today isn't the end of the world, it’s just an obstacle. Don’t get depressed over bad news. This is a marathon, not a sprint. You only truly lose when you decide to stop walking
The system wants you lonely, quiet and defeated. Don't let them have it.
Take these tools and remember: they can pass all the laws they want, but they can’t rule over a community that is uncloseted, proud and ‘owns it’
